چکیده

High resolution topographic data have the potential to differentiate the main morphological features of a landscape. For the purpose of this study the Digital Terrain Models (DTMs) ranging between 1m and 20m (cell size) were derived from the last pulse LiDAR data by filtering the vegetation points. We tested the effects of different resolutions in the analysis of river morphology, and potential slope stability. The study was conducted in two headwater catchments located in the eastern Italian Alps where a high-quality set of LiDAR data was available. The results indicated for higher DTM resolutions an improved effectiveness in the recognition of river morphology. Otherwise the progressive finer DTM resolution does not necessarily improve the interpretation of slope stability processes especially if landslides occur at a spatial scale significantly greater than cell size. * Corresponding author.

Characterisation of the surface morphology of an alpine alluvial fan using airborne LiDAR

Alluvial fans of alpine torrents are both natural deposition areas for sediment discharged by floods and debris flows, and preferred sites for agriculture and settlements. Hazard assessment on alluvial fans depends on proper identification of flow processes and their potential intensity. This study used LiDAR data to examine the morphology of the alluvial fan of a small alpine stream (Moscardo ...

A Comparative Study of Curvature and Grid Data Reduction Algorithms for Lidar-derived Digital Terrain Models

Abstract A digital terrain model (DTM) is defined as the digital cartographic representation of the elevation of the earth's surface created from discrete elevation points. DTMs have been applied to a diverse field of tasks, such as forest management, urban planning, ice sheet mapping, flood control, road design, hydraulic simulation, visibility analysis of the terrain, and topographic change q...

Assessment of Image-Based Point Cloud Products to Generate a Bare Earth Surface and Estimate Canopy Heights in a Woodland Ecosystem

We examine the utility of Structure from Motion (SfM) point cloud products to generate a digital terrain model (DTM) and estimate canopy heights in a woodland ecosystem in the Texas Hill Country, USA. Very high spatial resolution images were acquired with a Canon PowerShot A800 digital camera mounted on an unmanned aerial system. Image mosaicking and dense point matching were accomplished using...

Automatic Detection of Gravel Bars in a River Channel from Airborne Lidar-derived Dtm

Airborne Laser Scanning or LiDAR data are widely used nowadays in river valleys for topography and hydro-morphology. However, the large data sets of unprocessed 3D point clouds require some challenging treatment and end-users may prefer to deal with DTMs (Digital Terrain Models) derived from LiDAR surveys. Without any complementary data (such as field survey or photographs) detecting position a...

Intelligent Integration of Multi-sensor Data for Risk Assessment in Transport Corridor Environments

Roads and railways are founded on earthwork structures such as embankments, which can be susceptible to slope instability and failure, with serious economic and safety implications. Existing approaches to earthwork condition appraisal are labour-intensive and hazardous. While the increasing availability of high resolution geospatial data offers improved opportunities for remote and efficient sl...
